Here are some facts for kids about the Titanic

-The Titanic hit an iceberg late at night on April 14, 1912, and sank in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912.

-There were approximately 2,222 passengers on board the Titanic when it hit an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland. Only 715 people survived, while 1,517 died. These numbers of passengers who died on the Titanic can’t be confirmed as exact, because there may have been passengers on board who weren’t listed on the ship’s manifest.

-There weren’t enough lifeboats on the Titanic for all of the passengers on board, which is why so many people died. There were 16 lifeboats, which could each hold 65 passengers, but in the panic and chaos, many of the lifeboats went out with only a few passengers on them. If all of the lifeboats had been filled to capacity, at least 1,040 people could have survived the sinking of the Titanic. This was one of the biggest mistakes of the Titanic’s voyage.

-The Titanic was on its “maiden” voyage, or first voyage, when it sank. The Titanic was traveling from Southampton, England to New York City, USA, and it sank off the coast of Newfoundland, in the Atlantic Ocean.

-In 1912, the Titanic was the largest manmade, movable object ever constructed. The Titanic was 882 feet long (almost the length of three football fields) and 92.5 feet wide (at its widest point).

-Before it struck the iceberg, the Titanic was thought to be “unsinkable,” because it had fifteen separate, watertight hulls.

-What the engineers who designed the Titanic couldn’t have known was that it would hit an iceberg that slashed a 300-foot gash in the side of the Titanic, causing water to pour into five out of fifteen of the hulls. Thomas Andrews, who was the head engineer on the Titanic, was one of the famous passengers who died on board.

-Edward John Smith was the captain of the RMS Titanic, and he went down with the ship, perishing when the Titanic sank.

-Almost three hours elapsed between the time the Titanic hit the iceberg and the time it sank. As it was sinking, the bow of the ship went underwater and tilted the ship until it was almost vertical, rising up into the moonless sky. At the last moment, the Titanic snapped in half, and the stern crashed into the Atlantic ocean. The Titanic sinking took place at 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912.

-The first rescuers arrived on the scene of the Titanic crash at approximately 4:30 a.m. The RMS Carpathia had to navigate a treacherous path of icebergs to get to the survivors, and 705 people were pulled from lifeboats.

-At the time when the Titanic sank, a sea law as in place that required that women and children be rescued first. For the most part, this law was followed, which meant that most of the people who died on the Titanic were men.

-The official name of the Titanic was the RMS Titanic. RMS stands for “Royal Mail Steamer.”

-The Titanic had two main steam engines, which were fueled by twenty-nine boilers.
